Guide to European Soccer |
| Organized Soccer -- Football, as it is known in Europe -- was born in a London, England, Pub on 26 October 1863 when a group of clubs met to form an association and agree on a set of common rules. But the big breakthrough came with the appearance of professional players in 1885 and the formation of the English Football League -- the brainchild of a Scot, William McGregor -- who persuaded 12 clubs: Preston North End, Bolton Wanderers, Everton, Burnley, Accrington, Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Notts County, Derby County and Stoke to establish a home and away fixture list which kicked off on 8 September 1888 -- so creating Europe's first Football League.
Soccer is now a global sport, but European countries such as England, France (the current World Champions), Germany, Holland, Italy and Spain still number among the great football playing nations and their domestic leagues are among the finest in the world.
