Our Favorite Oscar Wilde Websites
Oscar Wilde is one of Ireland's better known writers. He was born in 1854 as Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde, the son of a Dublin surgeon. While at Oxford University, Wilde embraced the Aesthetic Movement, which advocated "art for art's sake."

The first works he published were children's stories such as "The Selfish Giant." In 1891 he wrote "The Picture of Dorian Gray." He was also a playwright, among his plays are: "Lady Windermere's Fan" and "The Importance of Being Earnest." His plays were very popular in Victorian London and he became the toast of the town. He later wrote the haunting poem "The Ballad of Reading Gaol."

Oscar Wilde is definitely one of the English language's greatest and most accomplished writers.
