Lookin' for the Best: Music of the 20's Websites
Reminding you of all the great music, reminding YOU to be A-L-I-V-E! Find the songs, the artists, and others who share your passion...
The Charleston!
Of course I just HAD to list something for the dance that is almost synonymous of the 20's. Visit StreetSwing's Dance History Archives and learn all about one of the most famous dances of the whole 20th Century.

The page is a bit hard to read with the font so small, but well worth making the effort. Many cross-links. Scroll down for a whole host of organized info (I didn't know there was so much to it!). Also a how-to at bottom of page!

20's Pop: Jazz, Blues, Dance
Scroll down past the Content links and find some of the 20's greatest (two pages worth): Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, the Boswell Sisters, Bing Crosby, Duke Ellington, Ruth Etting, Al Jolson, Helen Morgan, Jelly Roll Morton, Red Nichols, King Oliver, Bessie Smith, Rudy Vallee, Fats Waller, Fred Waring, Ethel Waters ... Mini bios on, and links for, each. Then check out the whole site, the "Web's first comprehensive site devoted to the 1920s." What a ton of info!

Bathtub gin, speakeasies, hot jazz, the Charleston... Read a little about the "Sin in Syncopation," then scroll way down for some RealAudio. "Get Hot!" with tunes like: Crazy Words, Crazy Tune; Black Bottom / Birth of the Blues; You’se a Viper... (Selections change regularly, with six to eight selections available at any time.)

The Lawless Decade
By Paul Sann. I must start you off on the home page of this site, just so you can hear Berlin done in Ragtime! (A must hear!!! A medley over 4 minutes long!)

The site is excerpted from the book: a very nicely done history with pictures of the decade year by year. Although the midis do make the pages slow-loading, the music is worth it -- especially that home page and the individual years.

1920: Ain't Misbehaven'. 1921: I'm Just Wild About Harry. 1922: Don't Get Around Much Anymore ... (You get the picture.) And don't skip 1923: Sweet and Lowdown (almost 4 minutes). Another absolutely must, must hear! Utterly delightful!!!

What Is Ragtime, Stride and Novelty Piano?
To me, Stride is what the rest of us think of as Ragtime, (Fats Waller as opposed to Scott Joplin). In other words, a faster Ragtime -- with swing.

Although the main page on this John Roache site may be confusing, you'll want to see it. When ready, press the "Lecture" key on the piano keyboard for "A Little History," complete with musical examples, to explain "...Ragtime, Stride and Novelty Piano..." Do also check out the Stride page for Stride, Swing and Piano Novelties of the 1920's to 1940's.

When that page comes up, scroll down and you'll not only get the Song Title and Composer but the Style of the piece as well. Making a selection brings up a page with great info on the song. Listen to a sample or download the song in compressed format. Wonderful site! Only thing missing, (would you believe it), is Fats Waller. (Holding your mouse over the John Roache banner switches it to a menu.)
