Great Art Museum Websites
Welcome to Art Museums Around the World! Please join me on a tour of some of the most interesting and varied museum collections on the web. Nourish your spirit as we look at and learn about art.

Here are some great links to get you started.

Unless otherwise noted, all sites are available in at least 3 languages.

Louvre
Mona Lisa's here, of course, plus dozens of other paintings and sculpture you learned about in Art History 101. If you've got QuickTime4, you can take a virtual tour through the Louvre, inside and out. Otherwise, stick with the "Collections" link on the left.

Metropolitan Museum of Art
Sit by the reflecting pool at the Egyptian Temple of Dendur, watch the light stream through a colorful Tiffany window, imagine the thunderous clank of an armored joust, or bask in the glow of a Rembrandt or Vermeer. If you can't make it to the Met in person, spend a few hours cruising through their incredible site, surely one of the most sophisticated on the web. Bring your credit card -- even the online shop is fabulous.

National Gallery of Art
Go straight to the NGA Kids section and have an Adventure with Art. Tissot's Hide and Seek is a fun place to start. There's serious data here, too, with information on more than 100,000 items. Try the Tour of the Week through the "Collection" link on the left.

Rijksmuseum Amsterdam
Navigate your way through this site with cool animated graphics. Known for their Rembrandts and Van Goghs, the Rijksmuseum also has Asian art, furniture, and a surprising collection of hats!

Vatican Museums
The brief history of the Vatican Museums is dull and the font is uninspiring, but wait until you see the art! More images and more links than you can shake a crosier at.

Other Art Museum Resources

Art Museums at Suite101
More than 50 articles and about 3 dozen links introduce you to a variety of art and history museums. The Art Museums Discussion Board is not very active, but Suite101 in general is a thriving web-based community. You can read the articles whether or not you join The Suite. In English only.
